Media Award
The Carlton Sherwood Media Award annually recognizes both
journalistic excellence and those members of the media who have shown special
interest in—and dedication to—the needs and concerns of American veterans.
The award is named in honor of the highly decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Mr. Sherwood has achieved excellence in both the print and electronic media. His other reporting honors include awards from Sigma Delta Chi, the national journalistic society; the Peabody Award; the Robert F. Kennedy Prize from the Kennedy Foundation; and the Silver Gavel Award of the American Bar Association.
One of the first recipients of the Sherwood Award was ABC News Correspondent Jack Smith, who again serves and Master of Ceremonies for this 14th Annual BAVF Awards Ceremony. Not only is he a distinguished newsman and war correspondent, he is also a Vietnam combat veteran and holder of the Purple Heart. Not content to report from behind the lines, Mr. Smith has pursued his stories where the action is—whether it be in Vietnam, Cambodia, or Iran. He was awarded The Overseas Press Club Citation for Excellence in Reporting in 1967.

Henry Allen, The Washington Post
Jim Bohannon, National Radio Talk Show Host
A Marine veteran of Vietnam, Henry Allen is a staff writer in the Style section of The Washington Post. He has covered the White House and Congress for the New York News. Along with his writing and editing at the Post, he has written for the New York Review of Books, the New Yorker, Forbes, the Paris Review, Smithsonian, Vogue, and the Wilson Quarterly.
He has won the American Society of Newspaper Editors award for commentary and the American Society of Sunday and Feature Editors prize for feature writing. He has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in both criticism and feature writing. In 1999 he taught a course in culture and meaning in the University of Maryland's Honors Program.
This September Pantheon Books will publish his book, "What It Felt Like B Living in the American Century". In 1994, Smithsonian Institution Press published a collection of his cultural criticism, "Going Too Far Enough", and in 1982, Houghton Mifflin published his novel, "Fool's Mercy". "Glare", a chapter of his poetry, was published in 1991.
Jim Bohannon is a 40-year broadcast veteran whose Westwood One radio programs are heard on hundreds of stations across the United States. His programs include the "Jim Bohannon Show" of interviews and call-ins, aired nightly on nearly 400 stations coast to coast (with an estimated audience of six million listeners), and "America in the Morning," an early morning news magazine, also heard on nearly 400 stations. He was recently listed in USA Today as one of the 25 most influential talk show hosts in the country.
His television background includes hosting the former CBS-TV "Nightwatch" program, hosting various programs with Maryland and Nebraska public television, anchoring local news in Chicago and street reporting in Chicago for CNN.
Before joining Westwood One and its predecessor company, Mutual Broadcasting, in 1983, Jim worked for WCFL radio in Chicago and WTOP and WWRC radio in Washington, among other stations.
